Owens Corning Therma Fiber

At the Owens Corning Thermafiber production plant in Joplin, Missouri, Watson and Sons Construction was awarded a project to replace the facility’s old melting pit. The new melting pit would be required to contain molten rock that reaches a temperature of 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. To achieve such heat, the project called for 15 ft. tall walls made from a special mix of heat refracting concrete, along with lining the interior with steel plating around the lower half of the pit for additional reinforcement. The scope of work covered in contract was estimated to take 2 months, but under a tight deadline, the project was given 22 days to complete. Through a lot of planning, site preparation, and communication, WSC was able to finish the project on time and within budget.
